Curtains for windows with crown molding
I recommend removing the crown molding on the cabinets, making it more substantial and taking it all the way to the ceiling just around the cabinets. It is okay if the colors don't match up perfectly at the wall because the molding will be on a different surface. Make the cabinets stand out like a separate piece of furniture.
If you added another layer of detail to the bottom of the cabinet molding and took the top of the crown to the ceiling, I think it would look very nice. Issue with crown molding over arch window in entry Q. Replacing the window is not an option, and I seriously doubt lowering it is as well. This is not a "custom" home build and the brick is already in. I think adding the casing around the window to match the door and tying in the crown molding above is probably the best solution, so hopefully my builder will go for it.
If not, would it look terrible to have them put the crown all the way across and simply arch the lower portion of it where it meets the window? I'm having a hard time visualizing that, but here in Texas, most homes do not come with casing around any of the windows, only the bottom sills in functioning windows.
Thank you all! So if you are going to remove the soffit above the cabinets in this last photo that was what I was trying to ask but didn't do it well then your transition point would be to do the same thing on this side as on the other. Run the backboard over to the area of the new cabinets and do a return on the crown molding. There is no ideal solution - the joys of remodeling! Crown molding return example with no backboard. If there is a backboard, it would run all the way over to whatever it abuts and then there is so piece of wall space showing.
Can't find a photo of that. What we did in our foyer at home was to create and use corbels at each end of the run of crown so that we did not have to do a return. It is a different look, but don't have a photo of it. This idea would work well particularly in the area near the refrigerator - and if you used it there I think you would want to use it on the other side.
We got the idea from an old downtown hotel in Louisville, KY. As soon as I stepped off the elevator, I knew it was the answer to our problem. I can't find a photo, but imagine that the crown molding on this cabinet is on the ceiling instead of a cabinet. The corbel would be at the end of the run at either side of the room.
The crown would go around it and stop there. Hope this makes some sense. K R 3 years ago. I had a designer help me with my modern remodel, and this is where she placed them in our dining room.
Like 3 Save. Anywhere inbetween really. The best height at which to hang your curtains depends on the style of window, window covering and the height of ceiling in the room. This gives us the loose, breezy curtains we like, while still allowing us to barely cover the window molding, which is what creates the illusion that the windows are wider than they really are.
Any type of heater can start a fire under the right conditions, but fires started by curtains most often occur with electric baseboard heaters due largely to the way the heaters work. How to fix it: Aim for the magic middle ground literally —curtains that hover just above the floor. Yes, curtains should be long enough to touch the floor. With a few exceptions, the longer the curtains are the more stylish and elegant it will look.

My ceilings are 12 ft and I have a very large window that has only 23 inches of wall on each side. There is molding all around my window but the molding at the top of the window sticks out 6 inches. Yes, 6 inches!!! I cannot find any brackets for draperies that extend out that far. If I use brackets with 6 inch extensions which are the longest I have found my draperies will drag on molding as I want to hang the draperies up to the ceiling.
Any ideas on how to make an extended bracket??? You may have to get them custom made or use wood shelf brackets. Molding can be so beautiful but hard to hang curtains around. Thanks for a quick response. I saw these, and love the colors. The wife and I are looking for something very similar.
