MIBs, short for Management Information Bases, are hierarchical databases of information pertaining to monitored devices. There are several MIB browsers on the market, including professional options and free and open-source tools. It can also be used to modify or organize information on those same devices, which include hosts, servers, printers, routers, and switches.

An OID is usually an address matched to a particular device. You can use the OID associated with devices to check device information, performance, sensor data, and so on. Simply put, MIB translates the OID, enabling a management station to understand the device status and related information. The MIB browser allows you to pull out data from the printer in a format you can understand.

Although all MIB browsers assist you in understanding and working with your device data, their features and capabilities vary. In addition, network engineers and troubleshooting staff usually need a solution beyond a simple MIB tool, so the ideal MIB browser will come as part of a larger offering. MIBs are a collection of definitions which define the properties of the managed object within the device to be managed such as a router, switch, etc.

Each managed device keeps a database of values for each of the definitions written in the MIB. As such, it is not actually database but implementation dependant. In order for all of this to be properly organized, all of the manageable features of all products from each vendor are arranged in this tree. This is the OID. Nodes near the top of the tree are extremely general I nature.

For example, to get to the Internet, one has to reach to the fourth tier. As one moves further down, the names get more and more specific, until one gets to the bottom, where each node represents a particular feature on a specific device or agent.
