The Program offers a significant amount of elective time and a wide selection of elective opportunities to allow residents to tailor their residency to their own needs and interests. Our very flexible vacation system makes managing family life easier.

We have a comprehensive academic program that will help you develop your family practice skills and prepare for the CFPC examination. We have an enthusiastic and caring administrative staff. Raquel Feswick, Bronwen Burton and Crystal Bloom will make you feel at home and supported throughout your two years. Residents may live and take core rotations and electives throughout the Lower Mainland, from White Rock to North Vancouver.

A Skytrain station at the Royal Columbian makes travel to downtown easy. Our Program allows residents to experience the diversity of Vancouver and surrounding municipalities. Our administrative staff and I encourage and support the social and family lives of our residents and are there to support you. The Vancouver Fraser Site VFS offers the perfect balance between smaller community hospitals and high-volume, high-acuity, tertiary care academic centers. As a VFS resident, not only will you get to experience beautiful British Columbia and live in a world-class city, but you will also find yourself in a supportive, flexible program where your experience can be tailored to meet your personal learning objectives. An advantage of our program is the access to multiple training sites. While our residents are based at the Royal Columbian Hospital, they have the opportunity to work in a variety of hospitals including Mount St.

This diverse selection of sites allows for a rich, well-rounded training experience. At the smaller locations, residents work closely with community-based physicians and are involved in all areas of patient care, allowing for a smooth and rewarding transition into independent practice. Working alongside other postgraduate trainees, you are also afforded the opportunity to engage in medical student teaching. In addition, residents will be provided with the option of a Sports Medicine rotation in lieu of an Orthopedic rotation at the renowned Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre.

Family Practice today is increasingly office based, and our site excels in training residents to be confident outpatient clinicians. At our site, residents have the opportunity to either attend an academic clinic for the first year, or be engrained in community practice for all of residency.

During this second year you will also spend two months working with a Family Physician in a rural BC community of your choice. Another important aspect of our program is that it is not service-based, as might often be expected in residents training in urban tertiary teaching centers. Snaw Naw As is a 90 home community located on 54 hectares just north of Nanaimo. The community opened a Health Care Centre in and now has doctors and residents rotating through it weekly. Residents based in Ladysmith collaborate with the Nanaimo Family Practice site for academic weeks and in-hospital rotations.

The Nanaimo Regional General Hospital provides service at the primary care and secondary referral level. It serves an immediate population of 90, and a referral population of , Current acute care bed allocation is and annually there are 76, acute patient days, 12, admissions, 11, in-and-outpatient surgical operations, 48, visits to emergency and 1, deliveries.

There are physicians on active staff. Located on Cormorant Island, off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, it is approximately miles by water from Vancouver. Alert Bay has a population of approximately residents. Family Medicine training in BC presents you with many unique opportunities. We are a fully accredited distributed program with 20 training sites. In an effort to meet the evolving needs of our society, each site provides a solid foundation in the knowledge and clinical skills of Family Medicine so that our graduates are prepared to practice in a variety of settings.

While our program offers diversity of training, it is based on common goals, learning objectives, and assessment standards. All residents are required to do a mandatory 2-month rural rotation in Family Medicine in their second year. Residents in the Coastal, or rural programs in the Okanagan or the North complete longer rural placements. Residents can also apply to participate in Enhanced Rural training for a total of months in rural communities. There is extensive academic and administrative support for the entire residency program.

Our central program administrative team is based in Vancouver on UBC campus. Lead Program Faculty provide provincial education support in the areas of curriculum, assessment, faculty development, scholarship and behavioral medicine.

The Family Practice Postgraduate Education Committee has representation from all sites to ensure a connected, distributed program that fully meets accreditation standards. Residents are represented at all levels of governance. A wide range of amazing recreational and cultural opportunities are at your doorstep, as well as a collegial community of residents and physicians with whom you can learn, grow, and play.

Each site provides opportunities to experience Family Medicine in their unique context, offering special opportunities to gain experience and skills unique to the area where you are training. Our faculty is just as diverse and energetic with board certified family physicians who teach and practice alongside our residents. We have special expertise in muscoloskeletal and sports medicine, maternal child health, HIV and integrative medicine.

When residents are not busy learning, they can often be found outdoors, exploring the Pacific Northwest or just 10 miles south, soaking up the culturally and culinarily-rich city of Portland, Oregon.
